Just under two weeks before the death of her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson delivered a deeply emotional performance during her Las Vegas residency. The moment, captured by an audience member and later shared online, showed the singer fighting back tears while performing a new version of her 2015 hit "Piece by Piece."

The song, originally written during the early years of Clarkson's marriage, had once reflected hope and trust in her relationship. Over time, however, its meaning evolved alongside her personal life. After her divorce in 2020, Clarkson adjusted the lyrics to convey the pain and frustration she felt during that period. More recently, she reworked the track once again to reflect a more balanced and self-assured perspective, shaped by personal growth and therapy.

During the July 26 show, Clarkson introduced the updated rendition, which focuses on self-love and resilience rather than anger. Her visible emotion suggested a deeper personal connection to the song at that moment, something that has taken on greater significance in light of events that followed.

On August 7, Blackstock died at the age of 48 after a lengthy battle with melanoma. His illness had been kept largely private, though Clarkson postponed her remaining Las Vegas dates just a day before his passing to be with their children. The former couple, married in 2013 and divorced seven years later, shared two children, daughter River and son Remington.

According to those close to her, Clarkson has been deeply affected by Blackstock's death, particularly for the sake of their children.
The resurfaced performance clip has since been viewed widely, with many noting how it captured an unguarded moment for the Grammy-winning artist.
