Carrie Underwood is literally returning to her roots. On August 4, the American Idol judge exchanged her trademark golden hair for a brownish blonde 'do, revealing that it was the first time she had worn the color in 30 years.

Carrie posted images of her freshly tinted hair on Instagram along with the caption, "Well, the last time I saw my natural hair color, I was probably about 12 years old, but I thought it might be time to give it a second chance."

The 42-year-old captioned the photo with "#NewOldMe," thanking Nashville-based colorist Katelin August for "helping me get back to my roots."

Carrie has, in fact, been waiting a long time to experiment with her appearance. She stated, "I'd love to do a little more with hair color," in Refinery 29 in 2012. I've been blonde all my life! The issue is that I don't want to startle people. For example, I don't want people to think I'm becoming serious and dark if I dye my hair brown.

"I wish I had started changing my hair around in the beginning," she said, "then it wouldn't be such a big shock if I did something like that now."

The singer of "Before He Cheats" has actually occasionally felt as though she is stuck with a particular style.

"I think I experienced a lot of fascinating hair-related events when I was on Idol," Carrie—who first appeared on the singing competition in 2005—told Redbook in 2013. "That was my first time having anybody fix my hair."

"I had a lot of big hair," she added. And I like big hair, but I wouldn't go back there again."

And having two sons, Isaiah, age 10, and Jacob, age 6, with husband Mike Fisher is largely responsible for that.

"Cutting my hair was a'mom' move," she told Elle in 2016 after taking off her hairpiece. "I could spend half an hour to blow it dry and have it be super long, or I could spend that time playing with my son, and I'd much rather do the latter."
