Prime Video has dropped the first teaser and exclusive images for its highly anticipated psychological drama series, The Girlfriend, starring Emmy-nominated actress Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke. Based on Michelle Frances’ bestselling novel of the same name, the six-episode series is set to premiere globally on September 10.
In The Girlfriend, Wright plays Laura, a woman whose life appears idyllic—she’s successful in her career, happily married, and deeply devoted to her son, Daniel. But things take a dark and twisted turn when Daniel introduces Cherry, played by Cooke, as his new girlfriend. At first glance, Cherry seems sweet and unassuming, but Laura senses something more sinister beneath the surface. As tension mounts between the two women, suspicions grow. Is Cherry a calculated manipulator with a hidden agenda? Or is Laura simply seeing threats where there are none? The series leans into this psychological cat-and-mouse dynamic, making viewers question whom to trust.
Rounding out the cast are Laurie Davidson, Waleed Zuaiter, Tayna Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn, Anna Chancellor, Leo Suter, and Francesca Corney. The show has been adapted for television by Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, with writing contributions from a team that includes Polly Cavendish, Helen Kingston, Marek Horn, Ava Wong Davies, Isis Davis, Smita Bhide, and Matt Evans.
Wright also serves as executive producer alongside Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, John Zois, Dave Clarke, Gabbie Asher, and Michelle Frances. The production is backed by Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios, with Jonathan Cavendish and Caroline Norris producing.
Meanwhile, ESPN has announced the recipients of the Icon Award for the upcoming 2025 ESPY Awards, set to air live on July 16 from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. This year, WNBA legend Diana Taurasi and U.S. soccer star Alex Morgan will be honored for their remarkable contributions to sports.
Taurasi, widely regarded as one of the greatest women’s basketball players of all time, retired after the 2024 WNBA season. She ends her career as the league’s all-time leading scorer, having won three WNBA championships with the Phoenix Mercury, three NCAA titles with UConn, and six Olympic gold medals with Team USA.
Alex Morgan, a trailblazer in women’s soccer, led the U.S. Women’s National Team to two FIFA World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. A standout since her debut at the 2011 World Cup, Morgan also secured a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and has served as team co-captain in multiple international tournaments.
Hosted by comedian Shane Gillis, the ESPYs will feature appearances from Simone Biles, Russell Wilson, Angela Bassett, Lindsey Vonn, Alison Brie, and more. Musical performances by Busta Rhymes, Clipse, and GELO are also scheduled, with an In Memoriam tribute led by Tobe Nwigwe featuring David Michael Wyatt.
The event will be broadcast live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PST, and will stream simultaneously on ESPN+, with on-demand access available the following day on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.
