Hollywood stars and longtime friends Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have teamed up for a new off-screen venture—this time, as co-owners of Australia’s SailGP team, now rebranded as the BONDS Flying Roos.
The announcement, made Thursday, confirmed that Reynolds and Jackman are joining forces with team driver and CEO Tom Slingsby, leading the reigning three-time SailGP champions into a new era. The team also unveiled a major partnership with BONDS underwear, marking the first time the Australian SailGP squad has had a title sponsor.
“We’re incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure,” the Deadpool & Wolverine co-stars said in a joint statement.
In typical Reynolds-Jackman fashion, the message was laced with their signature humor: “Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing. He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia. No comment on whether we’re writing this in our BONDS. No further questions.”
Slingsby praised the partnership, saying, “This is an incredible milestone for us and for our sport, having global icons Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds come on board as co-owners of our team. They bring unmatched star power, a love for storytelling, and a sharp sense of humor that fits perfectly with our team.”
With the addition of BONDS as the title sponsor, the team’s identity as the BONDS Flying Roos aims to blend elite competition with a distinctively Australian spirit. “We’re building something distinctly Australian; a team driven by spirit, resilience, and national pride,” Slingsby added.
The BONDS Flying Roos will make their official debut under the new ownership and branding at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, set to take place June 7-8.
This marks Reynolds’ third investment in the sports world. He already co-owns Wrexham AFC in Wales and Club Necaxa in Mexico alongside It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney.
The announcement comes during a turbulent period for Reynolds, who is entangled in a legal dispute involving his wife Blake Lively and It Ends with Us director Justin Baldoni. Lively recently withdrew claims of emotional distress after Baldoni’s legal team sought access to her therapy records. Both sides have filed suits alleging reputational harm.
