British pop sensation Jessie J has revealed she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, prompting an outpouring of support from fans and peers alike. The 37-year-old singer shared the emotional update via Instagram on June 3, stating her decision to go public was rooted in honesty and connection.
"This isn't something I planned to say, but I've been in and out of tests for months," Jessie said in the candid video. "I was diagnosed with early breast cancer before releasing 'No Secrets' in April." Though visibly shaken, she emphasized the term early—a word she clings to amid the uncertainty.
In the video, Jessie explained her initial hesitation to share the news. "I've gone back and forth about talking about this," she said. "I've always been an open book. And I know how much hearing others' stories has helped me." Her message came just days before her upcoming performance at Capital's Summertime Ball in London, scheduled for June 15.
After that performance, she said she plans to "disappear for a bit" to undergo surgery. "It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job," she joked, adding with her characteristic humor, "I'll come back with massive tits and more music." Though laced with levity, her words carried the weight of resilience.
Jessie, who is also a mother to 2-year-old Sky with basketball player Chanan Safir Colman, has faced immense challenges in recent years, including a miscarriage and a public diagnosis with ADHD and OCD. In her Instagram caption, she added, "This has given me the most incredible perspective... but your girl needs a hug."
Friends and fans quickly responded. Broadcaster Gaby Roslin wrote, "Sending you so much love and enormous hugs," while musician Jahnavi Harrison commented, "Much love and prayers for strength and courage."
Though no detailed medical reports have been released, early-stage breast cancer has a relative 5-year survival rate of 99% when detected at stage 0 or I, according to the American Cancer Society. Jessie's transparency could inspire early detection efforts and comfort those undergoing similar battles.
"I need to process it and talk about it," she concluded. "You've loved me through all my good and hard times. And I don't want this to be any different."
As she prepares for surgery, Jessie J remains defiant yet vulnerable—an artist who continues to sing, even when the notes turn heavy.
