The 2025 American Music Awards, held at the BleauLive Theater in Las Vegas, became a social media frenzy—not for a performance or a win, but for a wig. Reality star and singer Heidi Montag debuted a platinum blonde bob that starkly contrasted her signature long locks. The look, meant to be a lighthearted switch-up, drew swift and intense criticism online.
Comments poured in across platforms, some bluntly negative. One TikTok user wrote, "I love love love her, but you should've stopped that wig." Others labeled it the "worst wig of the night" and likened it to something "from Party City," according to Page Six. Amidst the storm, Montag's husband, Spencer Pratt, took to social media to defend her, humorously highlighting the financial realities behind red carpet fashion.
"We don't have [a] $20,000 wig budget," Pratt stated on TikTok, referencing the estimated cost of high-end wigs worn by top-tier celebrities like Beyoncé. "So it's a cute little wig for the money we can afford. It was just supposed to be a fun little 'Oh look at the wig.' And it worked, I guess."
The couple attended the awards in support of Montag's upcoming album Heidiwood, set for release on May 30. Pratt used the moment to turn criticism into promotion. "Only 3 days! If you love her, buy the Heidiwood album so she can afford better wigs in the future," he posted alongside a red carpet photo. "Fancy wigs cost like $20K—ask Beyoncé," he added.
In a follow-up Instagram caption, he addressed detractors directly: "For the wig haters please pre-order Heidiwood now so that future wigs have more budget ❤️🙏."
Despite the online pushback, Pratt remained gracious. "A lot of people loved the wig. A lot didn't. But you know what? We're thankful to even be talked about at the AMAs," he said in another TikTok video. Montag echoed that sentiment in an Entertainment Tonight interview, saying, "We just thought we'd switch it up and keep it fresh. I've never done this, so it's very exciting."
Pratt closed with a dose of perspective: "I'm thankful so many people care about Heidi and want her to look her best. That's a blessing in itself."
