For years, fans have speculated that Aly and AJ's hit "Potential Breakup Song" was inspired by AJ Michalka's teenage relationship with Joe Jonas. But the sisters have continued to deny that rumor — and recently poked fun at it with a playful TikTok alongside the singer himself.

In the video, Joe Jonas, along with AJ and Aly Michalka, lip-sync a few lines from the song's opening verse, pretending to talk on their phones. They sing, "It took too long, it took too long, it took too long for you to call back / And normally I would just forget that / Except for the fact that it was my birthday / My stupid birthday." In the caption, Jonas jokes, "Ok but I'd never do that on your birthday." Aly and AJ replied in the comments, "And yet they STILL think it's about you."

Despite the ongoing fan theories, AJ confirmed in a 2020 interview with Insider that the song wasn't about anyone specific. She explained, "At the time, we weren't thinking it was going to be a breakup anthem, but it kind of became that, which is really cool."

That same year, the sisters responded to a post on X that claimed the song was about Jonas and clarified that a different track, "Flattery," from their Insomniatic album, was actually written about him.

Earlier this year, during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, AJ revealed that Jonas was her first kiss. "In a bowling alley. It was so innocent. It was sweet," she said.

So while "Potential Breakup Song" may not be about Joe Jonas, their past connection is real. The sisters and Jonas briefly dated and even toured together in their early Disney Channel days, crossing paths often during that time.

The TikTok video was filmed the same day Aly and AJ attended Jonas' show at the Peppermint Club in Los Angeles, where they joined him onstage to perform "No One" from their 2005 album Into the Rush.

Aly and AJ recently released their new album Silver Deliverer and are preparing for an upcoming tour. In a recent interview, they revealed fans can expect to hear songs from Silver Deliverer, A Touch of the Beat, With Love From, and Insomniatic — and yes, "Potential Breakup Song" will definitely be part of the live show.
