Serena Williams made a triumphant return to competitive tennis at Queen's Club, earning a doubles victory in her first match back after an absence of 1,375 days.

The 44-year-old American, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history, delighted a packed crowd inside the Andy Murray Arena on Tuesday evening as she stepped onto the court for the first time since retiring from the sport in 2022.

Partnering with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, Williams showed flashes of the form that helped her capture 23 Grand Slam singles titles during an extraordinary career. The duo produced an impressive performance to defeat third-seeded pair Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

Williams announced her departure from professional tennis in 2022, explaining that she was evolving beyond the sport after nearly three decades at the top level. However, speculation about a comeback began to build last year when her name appeared in the registered drug-testing pool. Rumors intensified further in February when she was listed among reinstated players by the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

Despite the growing chatter, confirmation of her return only came last week when organizers revealed she would team up with 19-year-old Mboko in the doubles competition at the historic Queen's Club tournament in London.

The announcement sparked a wave of excitement among tennis fans eager to see the legendary athlete compete once again. In the days leading up to the event, Williams said she felt no pressure to prove anything after everything she had already achieved in the game. Instead, she explained that one of her biggest motivations was giving her daughters the opportunity to watch her play professionally.

Her eldest daughter, Olympia, 8, and younger daughter Adira, who was born in 2023, were among the spectators cheering from the stands alongside their father. The family watched as Williams settled into the match and began producing the powerful shots that made her a global sporting icon.

There were a few signs of rust early on. Williams' first volley found the net, prompting questions about how quickly she would regain her competitive rhythm. Those concerns soon disappeared as she grew into the contest.

After 92 minutes on court, Williams sealed victory with one of her trademark serves, securing her first match win since the 2022 U.S. Open and marking a memorable start to her unexpected return to tennis.
