The 38-year-old retired from professional tennis following the 2024 Olympics and shortly after joined Novak Djokovic's coaching team in a surprise move. Their partnership, however, lasted just six months and ended in May 2025 after four tournaments. Djokovic, a former world number one, said he felt he "couldn't get more" out of the collaboration.
Reflecting on the experience, Murray described his time coaching Djokovic as "unique" and said it wasn't a transition he had initially planned to make so soon after retiring.
"It was a brilliant opportunity for me," he told Clare Balding during the unveiling of the Andy Murray Arena at Queen's Club. "I wasn't planning on going into coaching immediately after retirement, but it was a rare chance to work with one of the greatest athletes of all time."
Murray acknowledged the steep learning curve, particularly in how coaching differs from playing. "As a player, you're the centre of everything. But as a coach, you have to collaborate with physios, trainers, agents—and communicate effectively with the player. That's something I need to improve on if I want to coach again."
Despite results not going as hoped, Murray valued the experience both professionally and personally. "We shared some great moments off the court. The results weren't perfect, but we gave it a shot."
While coaching again isn't something he plans to do right away, he hasn't ruled it out for the future. "We'll see about coaching in the future," he said. "Just not for a while."
Turning to the current tennis scene, Murray praised the state of the men's game, especially after the thrilling French Open final where Carlos Alcaraz staged a historic comeback against world number one Jannik Sinner. The match, which lasted five hours and 29 minutes, was the longest French Open final ever.
"They're both amazing athletes with contrasting personalities, which makes it exciting for fans," Murray said, also tipping Britain's Jack Draper, currently world number four, to be a part of the sport's promising future.
"Alcaraz in particular brings an exciting style of tennis, and their rivalry could be huge for the game."
