Rafael Nadal, the undisputed King of Clay, received a fitting farewell on Sunday at Roland Garros, where he was joined by the three men who helped define an era of modern tennis: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. The “Big Four” reunited to honor Nadal’s incredible career and his record-breaking 14 French Open titles.

The emotional tribute took place on Court Philippe Chatrier, where Nadal played most of his 115 French Open matches. The 37-year-old Spaniard, cradling his son Rafael Junior, was visibly moved as chants of “Rafa! Rafa! Rafa!” echoed through the stadium, and a sea of terracotta T-shirts—handed out to fans before entry—set the scene for an unforgettable ceremony.

“It means a lot that you’re all here,” Nadal told his longtime rivals-turned-friends. “I really enjoyed a lot pushing myself to the limit every single day to compete with all of you.” He reflected on how time had softened old tensions: “All the nerves, pressure, strange feelings when you see each other when you’re rivals—it’s completely different when you finish your career.”

Federer, who once held Nadal’s hand as both wept during his own retirement, greeted him with the first warm embrace. Djokovic and Murray followed. Djokovic, fresh off winning his 100th career title the day before, made the trip despite a packed schedule. Murray, who had ended a short coaching stint with Djokovic earlier in the month, flew in from London just for the occasion.

“I didn’t know they would be here,” Nadal admitted, “but I could imagine they would come… Of course they know it would make the day very special for me.”

Murray shared a light-hearted moment with reporters, recalling a cheeky message he sent Nadal after Arsenal beat Real Madrid: “Just checking in to make sure you are OK.” Nadal laughed, saying he never replied when PSG beat Arsenal.

The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt speech from Nadal, delivered in Spanish, French, and English. He gave special thanks to his uncle and longtime coach Toni Nadal, before a silver plaque bearing Nadal’s footprint was unveiled next to the net post.

“It was perfect,” Nadal said. “I could not have expected a more emotional day… I am still a bit shy and don’t like to be the centre of attention. But I enjoyed it a lot.”
