A groundbreaking new K-pop group named 1VERSE has made its debut with two of its five members being defectors from North Korea. The group, consisting of Hyuk, Seok, Aito, Nathan, and Kenny, released its first album Friday, capturing global attention not only for its music but also for the powerful story behind it.

Hyuk, 25, fled North Korea in 2013 and now resides in South Korea. Recalling his childhood in the northeastern county of Kyongsong, he spoke of extreme hunger and desperation. Forced to begin working at just nine years old, he sometimes stole food and suffered beatings as a result. "I was really hungry and instinctively thinking about survival," he told Reuters.

Kim Seok, also 25, grew up near the Chinese border and discovered K-pop through smuggled media clips. He eventually escaped with his father and grandmother. Now, both Hyuk and Seok are realizing a dream they never thought possible—performing on a global stage.

Their debut track "Shattered" explores the pain of separation and loss. Hyuk said the song reflects his emotions upon learning of his father's death in North Korea. Despite their traumatic pasts, both singers hope their music inspires hope and courage in others facing hardship.

Producer Michelle Cho, CEO of Singing Beetle, described the group as a fresh voice in a genre often dominated by polished, idealized images. "Who doesn't love a story about chasing dreams from humble beginnings?" she said.

Kenny, a Chinese American member of the group, emphasized their unity despite diverse backgrounds. "Our group is just a unique type of global," he said. Their performance video, featuring slick choreography and vivid visuals, underscores their determination to break barriers and redefine what K-pop can be.

North Korea continues to harshly punish those caught consuming South Korean culture, and defectors often face risks even after reaching safety. Yet Hyuk and Seok believe that their visibility can challenge stereotypes and offer a message of resilience.

While their North Korean origin has drawn media interest, the bandmates are determined to be judged by the quality of their artistry. "I want to become an idol who brings energy and reminds people they are not alone," Hyuk said. With 1VERSE's debut, a new chapter in both music and human resilience has begun.
