Two people have died following the crash of a military helicopter in central Texas, authorities have confirmed, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The aircraft, identified by the United States Army as an AH 64 Apache attack helicopter, crashed in fields south of the village of Salado. The helicopter was based at nearby Fort Hood, one of the major United States Army installations in the region.
Emergency services were alerted at approximately 13:33 local time after receiving a report concerning wreckage in the area. When police arrived at the scene, they found the crashed aircraft and a large fire that was rapidly spreading.
Bell County Sheriff's Office spokesman Cliff Coleman described the blaze as "getting out of control very quickly," highlighting the urgency faced by emergency responders as they worked at the crash site.
The two occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities had not been provided in the information released following the incident.
The United States Army said an investigation into the crash was underway as emergency response efforts continued. Authorities were also focused on securing the site and supporting the initial response.
Brigadier General Ethan Diven, the acting commanding general of the 1st Cavalry Division, expressed condolences to the victims' families and emphasized the military's immediate priorities following the crash.
"Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts," Diven said. He added that the Army's thoughts were with the crew members and their families while officials awaited further information.
The AH 64 Apache is a military attack helicopter used by the United States Army. The aircraft is designed for a range of military operations, making any accident involving the helicopter a matter requiring detailed investigation.
At this stage, officials have not released information about what caused the crash. Investigators will be expected to examine the aircraft, the surrounding site and available operational information as they work to establish what happened before the helicopter went down.
