The McCain family announced his passing with heavy hearts, with sister Meghan McCain leading the tributes and remembering him as a "truly wonderful, joyful man."

Doug McCain, the eldest son of the late Senator John McCain and a decorated Navy pilot in his own right, has died suddenly at the age of 66. His family announced the news over the weekend, with no immediate cause of death disclosed. According to his obituary, he passed away last Wednesday, and services are scheduled for next weekend.

His half-sister, TV personality and podcast host Meghan McCain, was among the first to share the heartbreaking news publicly. "He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life," she wrote on Instagram. "He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together. Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp."

"Doug will be remembered for his generous heart, his loyal friendships, and his unwavering love for his family."
Born the biological son of Alasdair Swanson and Carol Shepp, Doug was adopted by Senator McCain in 1966 after the Arizona lawmaker married Carol the year prior. He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, attended the University of Virginia — where he met his wife of 40 years, Ashley — and joined the Navy in 1982, spending six years flying A-6 Intruders before becoming a commercial airline captain with American Airlines.

The McCain Institute remembered him as "a patriot and friend" to the many people connected to the senator's campaigns, Senate staff, and nonprofit work. His obituary described him as a devoted son, a loving father to daughter Caroline and son Doug Shepp McCain Jr., and a proud new grandfather to Teddy.

He is survived by his wife Ashley, his mother Carol, his two children, brother Andy McCain, sister Sidney McCain, and extended family. Senator John McCain died of glioblastoma in August 2018. Doug followed his father's path with quiet dignity — in service, in family, and in character.
