Hulu has decided not to move forward with the comedy pilot “Group Chat,” a project that had generated early interest thanks to its high profile creative team and cast. The series was inspired by the book The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness by La La Anthony and was developed by Kenya Barris, with Kim Kardashian attached as an executive producer.

Originally announced in 2024 as part of Kardashian’s first look deal with 20th Television, “Group Chat” centered on modern relationships and friendships, drawing from Anthony’s perspective on love and personal growth. Anthony not only executive produced the pilot but also starred in it, while Kardashian was set to appear as a guest star and narrator. The cast also featured Yaya DaCosta, Melanie Liburd, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Stephanie Suganami.

Despite the decision by Hulu to pass on the pilot, the collaboration between Anthony and Kardashian is far from over. Both remain actively involved in a new untitled comedy series currently in development at the streamer. This project is being written and executive produced by Tracy Oliver, with 20th Television again serving as the studio.

The upcoming series follows a compelling and character driven premise. It centers on a high profile crisis manager for professional athletes based in the Bay Area. Known for managing the reputations and scandals of others, her own life takes a dramatic turn when she faces a personal scandal involving her husband. As her carefully controlled world begins to unravel, she turns to three close friends who have supported her through different stages of her life. Together, they navigate the challenges of dating, ambition, motherhood, and the complicated process of starting over, all set against a backdrop of glamour and emotional upheaval.

Oliver brings strong credentials to the project. She is widely recognized for writing the successful 2017 comedy film Girls Trip, which achieved major box office success and became a cultural moment. Her previous work also includes films such as The Blackening, The Sun Is Also a Star, and Little. On television, she developed The First Wives Club series for BET Plus and created the Amazon Prime Video series Harlem, which ran for three seasons and earned a loyal audience.

While the cancellation of “Group Chat” may come as a disappointment, the continued partnership between Anthony and Kardashian signals ongoing confidence in their collaborative potential. With Oliver’s storytelling experience and a fresh narrative focused on friendship and reinvention, the new Hulu project represents a promising next chapter for all involved.
