Republic Film has joined forces with the Future Vision XPRIZE to launch a global competition aimed at supporting science fiction storytelling that imagines a positive and technology driven future for humanity. The initiative will award a total of 3.5 million dollars to filmmakers and creators, making it one of the more ambitious competitions designed to connect storytelling with emerging technology and public participation.

The competition invites filmmakers around the world to submit three minute trailers or short films that present an original science fiction concept focused on an optimistic view of the future. Submissions opened this week and will remain open until August 15. The grand prize winner will receive 2.5 million dollars in production funding, along with a

100000 dollar cash award. In addition to the financial support, the winning project will receive production assistance from Range Media and access to creative technology tools provided by Google.

Four finalists will also benefit from the competition. Each finalist will receive 100000 dollars, while another 500000 dollars in additional prize funding will be announced later in the competition process. The goal is to help promising science fiction concepts move beyond early ideas and into actual production.

Republic Film’s involvement adds a new layer to the project by allowing members of the public to invest directly in the winning film. Through the Republic platform, audiences and supporters will be able to collectively contribute up to another 5 million dollars in production funding. Investors will also have the opportunity to share in the film’s potential financial success, turning fans into financial stakeholders in the project.

Republic Film is part of Republic, a private investment platform that connects both accredited and non accredited investors with opportunities in industries such as technology startups, real estate, and entertainment. The company says it now has more than three million members worldwide and has helped deploy over 2.6 billion dollars across thousands of companies through its various investment platforms and funds.

The film division itself was launched in 2024 under the leadership of Marc Iserlis after the platform saw strong interest in entertainment investment campaigns. Earlier fundraising efforts connected well known filmmakers and studios with fan investors. For example, Skybound raised 18 million dollars from about 5000 investors while Bucket List Studios secured 3 million dollars from roughly 30000 investors.

Since launching Republic Film, several industry figures have used the platform to raise funding for their projects. Filmmaker Eli Roth raised about 6 million dollars from more than 2500 investors to launch his new horror studio. Director Robert Rodriguez secured around 2 million dollars from over 2200 investors for a new action slate. Pressman Films raised another 2 million dollars for development projects, and actor Ron Perlman raised 1 million dollars from around 1000 investors to support a filmmaker focused platform.

The initiative arrives at a time when film financing and distribution have become more challenging for many independent creators. Traditional funding models often rely on major studios or wealthy private financiers. Platforms like Republic Film offer an alternative approach that allows filmmakers to maintain greater creative independence while building an engaged audience early in the production process.

Republic co founder and co chief executive Kendrick Nguyen said that many everyday investors are eager for access to opportunities that were previously limited to a small group of industry insiders. By opening film investment to a wider community, the platform aims to give audiences a real stake in the projects they support.

The XPRIZE Foundation has a long history of organizing large scale competitions that encourage innovation across different sectors. Since launching its first competition in 1996, the organization says it has introduced more than 30 global challenges and engaged over 35000 innovators across 173 countries. According to the foundation, its prize competitions have helped transform more than 519 million dollars in prize funding into an estimated 31 billion dollars in economic and social value.

Peter Diamandis, founder and executive chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, said the Future Vision XPRIZE reflects a new direction for the entertainment industry. By combining science fiction storytelling with public participation and investment, the partnership with Republic Film aims to bring visionary ideas to life while strengthening independent filmmaking.

With filmmakers, investors, and audiences all participating in the process, the competition could create a new model for how ambitious science fiction films are developed and financed in the future.
