Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment have reached a historic agreement that reshapes the global film licensing landscape. The two companies announced a worldwide Pay 1 licensing deal valued at more than 7 billion dollars, marking the first time a major Hollywood studio has secured a single exclusive Pay 1 partner across nearly all international territories. Under this agreement, Sony’s theatrical films will stream on Netflix globally after completing their full theatrical and home entertainment windows.

While the financial terms were not officially disclosed, the scale of the deal represents a major increase from Sony’s previous Pay 1 agreement with Netflix signed in 2021. Industry sources indicate that Sony’s rate card under the new arrangement is approximately 40 percent higher across the board, with the majority of that growth driven by international markets. This highlights how valuable global exclusivity has become as streamers compete for premium content.

The most significant change in this new pact is the overseas component. Previously, Sony’s international Pay 1 rights were divided among multiple platforms depending on territory. With this deal, Netflix becomes the unified Pay 1 home for Sony films worldwide. The rollout will occur gradually beginning later this year as existing territory deals expire, with full global availability expected by early 2029. The agreement will run through 2032.

Netflix already holds Pay 1 rights to Sony films in several regions including the United States, Germany, and parts of Southeast Asia. Titles from the current arrangement include Uncharted, Spider Man Across the Spider Verse, Anyone But You, It Ends With Us, and Venom The Last Dance. Sony films have consistently performed well on Netflix, frequently appearing in the platform’s global top ten rankings. This strong performance helped make the expanded deal a logical next step for both companies.

The partnership also covers select Sony Pictures Entertainment feature film and television library titles, continuing a structure established in earlier agreements. Among the first new films expected to stream under the expanded deal are The Nightingale starring Dakota and Elle Fanning, Sony Pictures Animation’s Buds, Nintendo’s live action The Legend of Zelda, Spider Man Beyond the Spider Verse, and Sam Mendes’ upcoming series of Beatles films.

There had been industry speculation that Sony was exploring an offshore Pay 1 deal with Amazon, but Netflix ultimately secured the rights, building on a domestic and partial international agreement first reached in 2022 that was valued at 2.5 billion dollars over five years.

The deal also comes at a strategic moment for Netflix as it continues to pursue the acquisition of Warner Bros motion picture and television studios along with HBO Max. By reinforcing its commitment to licensing content from independent studios like Sony, Netflix may strengthen its position with regulators reviewing the transaction.

Netflix executives emphasized the value of the partnership, noting that exclusive access to Sony’s popular franchises and original films adds meaningful value for subscribers worldwide. Sony leadership echoed that sentiment, calling the agreement a major step forward that reinforces the enduring appeal of theatrical releases and the company’s ability to operate independently while creating strong partnerships.

Overall, the Netflix Sony global Pay 1 deal represents a major shift in how premium studio films are distributed worldwide and underscores the growing importance of global scale in the streaming era.
