Netflix has released the first trailer for Apex, an intense survival thriller that places Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton in a deadly game set deep within the unforgiving Australian wilderness. The film promises a tense and physically demanding experience, driven by psychological fear, raw landscapes, and a relentless chase that keeps its focus firmly on survival.

In Apex, Theron plays a grieving woman named Sasha who retreats into the wilderness in search of solitude and healing. Instead, her journey turns into a nightmare when she becomes the target of a serial killer played by Egerton. What begins as an escape from personal pain quickly transforms into a desperate fight for survival as the two are locked in a dangerous game of pursuit.

The trailer opens with an ominous warning aimed directly at Theron’s character. “Run for your life,” Egerton’s character declares in a chilling voiceover. He makes it clear that Sasha is not a random victim. “You’re special Sasha. I already know about you,” he says, suggesting a calculated and deeply personal hunt. As the tension builds, the voiceover continues with unsettling lines about danger, control, and perfection, ending once again with the command to run.

Set against vast and hostile natural terrain, the film leans heavily on atmosphere. The Australian wilderness is portrayed as both breathtaking and merciless, amplifying the sense of isolation and vulnerability. Rivers, dense forest, and remote stretches of land become part of the threat, leaving Sasha with nowhere to hide and no one to rely on but herself.

Apex is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, known for his work in intense survival driven storytelling. The script comes from Jeremy Robbins, and the cast also includes Eric Bana in a supporting role. Together, the creative team appears focused on grounding the film in physical realism while pushing its characters to emotional and physical extremes.

Theron recently spoke about the demanding shoot during Netflix’s 2025 upfront presentation in May. She joked about sustaining a fractured toe during production and hiding it while filming continued in Australia. With her usual humor, she described the experience of early mornings in the wilderness surrounded by natural sounds while knowing a serial killer character was waiting for her on set.

She emphasized how fresh the experience still felt, noting that filming had wrapped only a week earlier. Theron said she still had Australian dirt under her manicure and wore a boot to conceal the injury. Despite the physical toll, she described Apex as one of the most incredible experiences of her life.

Theron also revealed that the film allowed her to push herself further than ever before in action sequences. She shared that she performed stunts and intense action without fully realizing the risks at the time. According to her, Apex gave her the opportunity to surpass even the action work she completed in The Old Guard 2.

With its tense premise, strong performances, and stark setting, Apex is shaping up to be a gripping addition to Netflix’s thriller lineup. The trailer makes one thing clear. Survival will come at a cost, and only the strongest will endure.
