Disney is once again turning to its deep library of classic characters, this time focusing on one of its most recognizable villains. The studio is in early development on a live action movie centered on Gaston, the larger than life antagonist from Beauty and the Beast. Sources confirm the project is being written by Dave Callaham, with Michelle Rejwan producing. At this stage, no director is attached.

Gaston first appeared in Disney’s 1992 animated classic Beauty and the Beast as a boastful and ruthless hunter obsessed with winning the affection of Belle. His arrogance, vanity, and jealousy ultimately turn him into the primary adversary of the story, setting him on a collision course with the Beast. The character quickly became one of Disney’s most memorable villains, known for his bravado, physical strength, and darkly comic charm.

Disney previously revisited the story with its 2017 live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, which starred Luke Evans as Gaston. That film went on to earn more than one billion dollars worldwide, cementing the studio’s confidence in revisiting its animated classics in live action form. Following that success, there was discussion around developing a television series centered on Gaston, with Evans set to reprise the role. However, that project was eventually scrapped and never moved forward.

This new film represents a fresh approach. According to insiders, the movie will feature a new and original version of Gaston, played by a new actor rather than returning to the 2017 interpretation. Plot details remain under wraps, but sources describe the tone as swashbuckling, suggesting a more adventurous and action driven take on the character. Studio insiders are reportedly enthusiastic about the concept and believe there is strong potential in exploring Gaston as a standalone figure.

The script is being handled by Dave Callaham, a writer known for his work on large scale franchise films. His past credits include Godzilla x Kong, The Expendables, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider Man Across the Spider Verse. Callaham’s experience with high profile characters and blockbuster storytelling positions him well to expand Gaston’s world while staying true to the spirit of the original character.

Producing the film is Michelle Rejwan, who has a long standing relationship with Disney. Her history with the studio dates back to her time overseeing live action projects at Lucasfilm. Over the years, she has produced major titles including Star Wars The Force Awakens, Andor, Obi Wan Kenobi, and Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker. Her involvement signals Disney’s commitment to treating the project as a major priority.

While it remains early in development, the Gaston film reflects Disney’s continued interest in reimagining its iconic villains through a new lens. By combining a familiar character with a fresh creative team and a more adventurous tone, the studio appears intent on expanding the Beauty and the Beast universe in a way that feels both recognizable and new.
