Trafalgar Releasing has announced a March 11, 2026 domestic release for the Holocaust drama The Optimist, with an initial commitment of more than 700 theaters across the United States. The film stars Stephen Lang and Elsie Fisher and is based on
the true story of Holocaust survivor Herbert Heller, whose late life decision to share his past changed the lives of thousands of young people.
Set against the landscapes of Northern California, The Optimist centers on Heller, portrayed by Lang, a quiet childrens store owner who has spent more than six decades carrying the weight of his experiences as a teenager imprisoned in Terezin and Auschwitz. Arrested at just 15 years old, Herbert survived unimaginable cruelty but chose to bury his memories deep inside, keeping his story hidden even from his own family. As illness forces him to confront his mortality, he begins to question the silence that has defined his adult life.
That reckoning comes through an unexpected bond with Abbey, played by Fisher, a troubled teenager struggling with her own emotional wounds. Their unlikely friendship becomes the heart of the film. Through their conversations and shared vulnerability, Herbert finds the courage to finally tell the truth about his past. In doing so, he opens a path toward empathy, forgiveness, and personal renewal, not just for himself but for Abbey as well.
Writer and director Finn Taylor and producer Jeanine Thomas spent a decade developing the project and were able to spend meaningful time with Herbert Heller before his passing in 2021. Taylor described Heller as a true hero, noting that while his escape and survival were remarkable, what left the deepest impression was how Herbert later transformed the lives of countless teenagers by sharing his story. Taylor said the team took the responsibility of intertwining Herbert’s history with a modern coming of age story very seriously and worked with hundreds of collaborators across two continents to honor his legacy.
Producer Jeanine Thomas echoed that sentiment, calling the film the fulfillment of a personal promise she made to Herbert. She stated that his story helped her find her own courage and expressed hope that audiences nationwide will feel the same inspiration when they see the film in theaters.
Lang also spoke about the significance of portraying Herbert Heller, calling it a great privilege. He emphasized the importance of stories that highlight selflessness and kindness, especially in a world often marked by cruelty and division.
The ensemble cast includes Luke David Blumm, Leah Pipes, Ben Geurens, Ursula Parker, Slavko Sobin, Stella Stocker, Oskar Hes, and Robin Weigert. The film is produced by Jeanine Thomas and Noah Lang, with Todd Slater of Convoke Media serving as executive producer. Cinematography is handled by Antonio Riestraand and Alexander Surkala, with editing by Kaufmanova Olina and Rick LeCompte.
Kymberli Frueh, EVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing, described The Optimist as a powerful example of how storytelling can bridge generations and spark healing conversations. She expressed pride in bringing the film to cinemas, where audiences can experience its emotional impact together.
With its wide theatrical release and deeply human story, The Optimist aims to honor Herbert Heller’s life while reminding viewers of the enduring power of truth and connection.
