DC Studios has released the first trailer for Supergirl, offering fans their clearest look yet at Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El and the long-rumored debut of Jason Momoa as the intergalactic mercenary Lobo. The footage sets up next year's major DC event film with a mix of cosmic grit, emotional weight, and the punk edge James Gunn has teased for months.
Alcock's Supergirl immediately distinguishes herself from her more hopeful cousin Superman. "He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth," she says in the trailer, which features the character drinking on red-sun planets just to feel something. Unlike Clark Kent, Kara carries the trauma of witnessing Krypton's slow destruction and the loss of her entire world. Director Craig Gillespie emphasized during a New York preview event that this version of Supergirl arrives with "a lot of baggage and a lot of demons," calling the film far from a typical superhero story.
The trailer also introduces Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by Eve Ridley, the young alien who seeks Kara's help avenging her murdered family. That storyline mirrors Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the critically acclaimed comic arc that screenwriter Ana Nogueira adapts for the film. Matthias Schoenaerts appears as Krem of the Yellow Hills, the villain responsible for Ruthye's loss.
Gunn and DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran described the adaptation as faithful to the comic's heavy themes, even as the trailer's upbeat energy recalls Gunn's earlier work on Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn noted that the film "goes to very dark places," rooted in the contrast between Clark's loving upbringing and Kara's brutal survival.
Among the trailer's biggest surprises is the brief but striking appearance of Jason Momoa as Lobo. The cigar-smoking, motorcycle-riding outlaw emerges from the shadows in a single shot that immediately sparked fan reaction online. Momoa has long expressed interest in playing the character, making the casting both fitting and highly anticipated.
Rounding out the cast are David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Zor-El and Alura, along with the return of Krypto the Superdog. Supergirl opens in theaters June 26, 2026.
