Disney’s long-awaited Tron: Ares hit a speed bump over the weekend, opening to a modest $60.5 million worldwide, including $27 million from international markets. The film, directed by Joachim Rønning and starring Jared Leto, marks the latest entry in Disney’s 43-year-old cyber saga — but despite high anticipation, it fell short of pre-weekend projections.

While Tron: Ares didn’t electrify the box office as expected, audience and critical scores have been encouraging in certain regions, particularly France, where reception has outshone that of 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Across Latin America, the movie saw a stronger pulse, scoring No. 1 debuts in key territories including Brazil and Mexico, both surpassing the openings of Tron: Legacy and Alien: Romulus. Other notable No. 1 markets included Spain, the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong.

However, in regions like Germany and South Korea, Tron: Ares faced tough competition from strong-performing local titles. Still, Disney can find optimism in its Premium Large Format (PLF) and IMAX results, which delivered solid numbers. With no major competitors on the near horizon, the film is expected to retain its IMAX screens for at least another two weeks. The China release, slated for October 17, could play a crucial role in determining the film’s long-term global performance.

The movie’s Top 5 international markets for the opening weekend were Mexico ($2.9M), UK ($2.4M), France ($1.9M), Australia ($1.5M), and Germany ($1.4M).

Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ One Battle After Another continued its impressive run with just a 32% drop from last weekend, earning $15 million across 77 markets. The film’s global total now stands at $138 million, with $83.5 million coming from overseas. Strong performances were noted in Argentina (+20%), Korea (+6%), and several European territories. Its top markets include the UK ($11.2M), France ($8.5M), Germany ($6.4M), Italy ($4.4M), and Australia ($4M).

Elsewhere, Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie clawed its way to an additional $7.2 million from 11 new markets, bringing its international total to $19.5 million and global tally to $46 million.

Horror fans kept turning out for New Line/Warner Bros.’ The Conjuring: Last Rites, which surpassed the $300 million international mark after adding $5.8 million from 75 markets. The global total has now reached an impressive $473 million, led by Mexico ($30.5M), UK ($24.1M), and France ($22.3M).

Meanwhile, Crunchyroll/Sony’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle continues to dominate. The anime blockbuster has now grossed $648 million worldwide, climbing to become the fifth highest-grossing film of 2025. Its North American total of $128.6 million officially makes it the top-grossing international film of all time in the domestic market, surpassing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Over the weekend, it added $3.5 million from 62 international markets, lifting its international total to $336 million.

Other notable performers include Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc ($59M international cume), Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale ($94.3M global), The Bad Guys 2 ($227.6M global), and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey ($20.2M global).

Though Tron: Ares struggled to live up to franchise expectations, strong PLF support and upcoming major markets could help stabilize its run. Meanwhile, Demon Slayer continues to prove that animated epics — especially from Japan — remain a formidable force in the global box office landscape.
