Justine Musk is offering a rare look inside her marriage to Elon Musk, revealing that she learned the term "gaslighting" while she was married to the billionaire.
Justine, who married Musk in 2000 and had six children with him, is featured in Alex Gibney's new four-hour documentary Musk, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 8. The film explores the Tesla and SpaceX founder's personal life, business empire and political influence.
Speaking about their marriage, Justine said Musk frequently made her feel "insignificant" and spoke to her as though she were one of his employees.
"I learned the term 'gaslighting' through my relationship with Elon," she said in the documentary.
Justine also recalled an unsettling moment during their wedding reception. While the couple shared their first dance, she said Musk told her, "I am the alpha in this relationship."
"He was constantly remarking on the ways he found me lacking," she added.
The documentary also revisits the devastating death of the couple's first child, Nevada, who died from sudden infant death syndrome at 10 weeks old. Justine disputed a previous account from Musk suggesting that he was holding their son when he died, saying she was actually the one holding Nevada.
The couple went on to have five more children, including twins Vivian and Griffin. Their daughter Vivian later came out as transgender, a development that has significantly damaged her relationship with her father.
Justine claimed that Musk never attempted to repair his relationship with Vivian after she came out as trans. She also alleged that he cut off Vivian's health insurance, despite telling Justine to make sure their daughter knew that he would "always love her."
"Elon never tried to repair things. That's not in his nature," she said.
Musk has previously described his estrangement from Vivian in harsh terms, including saying in 2024 that he had lost his child to the "woke mind virus."
Justine and Musk separated in 2008.
Musk is scheduled to arrive in theaters Oct. 16.
