In a bold strike at Apple's dominance in the high-end mixed reality market, Samsung and Google have joined forces to unveil the Galaxy XR, an artificial intelligence–powered headset positioned as a direct rival to Apple's Vision Pro. Priced at $1,800, the new device lands at nearly half of Apple's cost yet promises an equally immersive experience.

The Galaxy XR marks the first real product born from Samsung's long-rumored partnership with Google and Qualcomm. It merges Samsung's hardware expertise with Google's software ecosystem, most notably, Gemini, Google's multimodal AI assistant that acts as the core of the XR experience.

Unlike conventional VR gear, the Galaxy XR blends virtual and real environments, letting users control digital spaces through hand gestures, voice commands, or both. The device's exterior cameras map the user's surroundings and project them in 4K quality inside the headset, offering a mixed reality experience that's interactive but practical.

What sets this headset apart is its deep AI integration. Gemini can identify real-world objects, generate quick responses, and even reorganize virtual workspaces with natural voice instructions. Buyers will also get a year of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and other XR-exclusive perks.

Samsung executives describe the headset as a "stepping stone" toward lighter, more stylish AI glasses, expected to arrive in partnership with eyewear makers Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. If successful, it could reshape how users interact with both digital content and their physical world.

Still, challenges remain. The mixed reality market has struggled to break into mainstream use, weighed down by high prices and limited content. Research firms estimate only a modest rebound in 2026, despite renewed competition.

Yet Samsung's bet feels deliberate. With Apple shifting its focus toward AI wearables and Meta continuing to dominate with its Ray-Ban line, the Galaxy XR arrives at a moment when the industry is searching for its next breakthrough.

Whether it dethrones Apple or not, Samsung's Galaxy XR signals one thing clearly: the race to build the future of face computing is officially back on, and this time, AI is behind the wheel.
