The Russo Brothers, known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have exciting plans beyond the superhero realm. One of their ongoing projects Is the Extraction franchise, which stars Chris Hemsworth as the emotionally wounded mercenary Tyler Rake. The first two films, directed by Sam Hargrave, have been successful on Netflix, and now fans can look forward to a third installment.

Speaking with GamesRadar+ at the Sands: International Film Festival, Joe Russo confirmed that he would be writing the screenplay for Extraction 3. He also shed light on the project’s development: “Yeah, we’re developing it at the moment, figuring out Chris’s schedule. Sam Hargrave is back directing. It’s an interesting franchise because Tyler Rake is a character with a lot of emotional depth. His backstory and relationship to violence, rooted in self-loathing and guilt, provide rich storytelling opportunities.”

The franchise’s first movie, based on the graphic novel Ciudad, hit Netflix in April 2020. It followed Rake’s mission to save an Indian druglord’s kidnapped son in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Despite mixed critical reception, Extraction shattered viewership records, becoming Netflix’s most-watched original film at the time. The sequel, Extraction 2, released in June 2023, continued Rake’s journey as he and his team faced high-stakes missions. Critics responded more favorably, and the film garnered significant views on Netflix.

While plot details for Extraction 3 remain under wraps, fans can expect the return of Idris Elba as Alcott/The Man in the Suit following his introduction in the second film. Elba’s mysterious character offers Rake and his partner a way out of prison, setting the stage for the third movie.

Beyond the Extraction universe, the Russo Brothers are also producing Disney’s live-action adaptation of Hercules, directed by Guy Ritchie. Their focus post-Marvel lies in original storytelling and new ideas, aiming to build their own cinematic legacy akin to Star Wars.

Although we don’t have an official release date yet, the anticipation for Extraction 3 continues to grow. In the meantime, viewers can revisit the first two films on Netflix in the U.S. and, if I’m not mistaken, worldwide.
